Dexter Wild West Weekend Rocks Again
Saturday, August 09, 2008
Written in part by Ike Morgan: DEXTER - The 6th annual Dexter Wild West Weekend once again lived up to its name despite some rainy and stormy weather. The occasional wet weather seemed to be no hindrance to visitors of this early August celebration.

Attendance at the events, spread out over three days, was excellent. There was something for everyone. The traditional visit to the Dexter Nursing Home kicked off the weekend. Games, music, cart rides, and many more wild west activities were offered throughout the weekend.

Hay bale tossing, skillet throwing, and watermelon seed spitting competitions created a lively scene at Wayside Park while Maine's largest pig scramble was held at P&L Country Store on Route 7. Thousands of spectators cheered on over 100 kids of all ages as they competed for the prized piglet.

A horse show at Elms Field and a car show at the municipal parking lot drew big crowds. Music and entertainment was provided by country music star Debbie Myers on Saturday night, Dexter's own local star Ray Stafford took the Main Street Stage on Friday night, Jim's Jamboree and friends at Wayside Park both Friday and Saturday, Zevelon on Sunday and Dexter's own Fishers of Men.

The Wild West Weekend is made possible the Dexter Regional Development Corporation who partners with the Town of Dexter & North Country Riding Club and the cooperation and hard work put in by many local businesses and individuals.

One of the main goals of the event is to foster a sense of community and at the same time promote the many businesses and organizations that operate in the Dexter area. From the looks of the numbers who attended The Wild West Weekend it certainly seems to have achieved that goal."This content originally appeared as a copyrighted article in the SVWeekly.com and is used here with permission."

Don't Mess With Pig Scramble Moms
Saturday, August 09, 2008
Written by Ike Morgan: DEXTER - So you think all those soccer moms, cheerleader moms, and softball moms can be a bit frothy at the mouth when it comes to urging their little Suzy or little Billy on? Well, look out, cuz you aint seen nothing yet.

Yep, I'm speaking of pig scramble moms. Pig scramble moms make the aforementioned moms look like Miss Polly Purebred out on a Sunday picnic.

The pig scramble mom is a unique creature indeed. How they avoid popping every vein in their head while they scream at little Suzy or little Billy to get the @#%$#!!! pig, I have no idea. How they don't blow there own eardrum out with the roar and shriek that comes out of their mouth is also beyond me.

If ever there was an exhibition of these most feared moms then it was at Maine's largest pig scramble held as part of Dexter's Wild West Weekend and sponsored by P& L Country Store.

If I had a choice between tangling with a crazed wolverine or a pig scramble mom I'd take the crazed wolverine and count my blessings. A 260-pound steroid soaked middle linebacker in the NFL would probably choose the wolverine too.

And don't think that when the pig scramble competition is over all those pig scramble moms turn back into the lovable mom we all know. No way. Time to take it to the parking lot and get into a good old fashioned shouting match, soon to be brawl, with another pig scramble mom who didn't like the way your little Suzy or little Billy ran in front their little Suzy or little Billy when chasing the pig.

Thank goodness for the Dexter Police."This content originally appeared as a copyrighted article in the SVWeekly.com and is used here with permission."

Key Club Corner
Saturday, August 09, 2008
DEXTER - Wild West Weekend was very busy for the Dexter Key Club. We spent Friday night selling concessions for the Ray Stafford Concert. We were set up in front of Tillson's and sold popcorn, nachos and beverages.

Then on Saturday, we had a busy day as well. We started the day at 8 a.m. by setting up Alex's Lemonade Stand and the Dexter "Shoe" Toss. We had shifts through out the day that different members helped out at by working at the different stands. The Dexter "Shoe" Toss turned out to be successful. We had a lot of people interested in trying their luck at throwing a shoe into the different obstacles we had set up.

Tillson's True Value was very supportive of the Key Club this weekend. They donated all of the profit from Friday night's concessions and all of the proceeds from Saturday's shoe toss to us as well. We would all like to thank them for their support and kindness over the weekend. Also on Saturday, at the Grist Mill we had set up all of the Children of Peace International items and they attracted many people walking by.

Wild West Weekend was a fun weekend for the Dexter Key Club.

As you all know school is creeping up fast and we are ready for another busy year of school. So any fans of the Key Club continue reading for more update on what is going to be happening this year for the Dexter Key Club."This content originally appeared as a copyrighted article in the SVWeekly.com and is used here with permission."

Inclement weather cancels Wild West Weekend NCRC horse show
Saturday, August 09, 2008
Written by Mary Taylor - DEXTER: The Wild West Days horse show, sponsored by the North Country Riding Club, got off to an early start Sunday morning, but before too long, the gray skies broke loose, showering down with thunder storms and canceling the remainder of the show after the lunch break.

But before everyone packed it in for the day, there were several classes that had an opportunity to show, including the colorful participants in the costume class.

This fun event is open to people of all ages who enjoy expressing their "creative and artistic" approach to saddling up."This content originally appeared as a copyrighted article in the SVWeekly.com and is used here with permission."
